Reading assignment:  __Ezekiel 24:15-27     __Jeremiah 21:1-14     __Jeremiah 34:1-7

Focal verse(s):  Ezekiel 24:16:  “Son of man, with one blow I am about to take away from you the delight of your eyes.  Yet do not lament or weep or shed any tears.

To graphically illustrate to the exiles the terrible tragedy the citizens of Jerusalem and Judah would go through during God’s judgment, God told Ezekiel that his dear wife was going to die and he would not be allowed to show any outer signs of grief or mourning.  The tragedy of Jerusalem’s destruction would be so awesome that outer display of grief would be inadequate.  When Jerusalem was finally destroyed, then Ezekiel would express his grief and explain his previous actions.  Meanwhile, back in Jerusalem the prophet Jeremiah was asked by King Zedekiah to ask the Lord about the attacking Babylonians, hoping God would deliver them.  Jeremiah returned to the king with the unpleasant message that they would be destroyed by the Babylonian army and anyone remaining in the city would die.  But Zedekiah was totally confident Jerusalem was a secure and safe fortress and ignored the prophet’s warning.  Jeremiah came back to Zedekiah (in the 34th chapter) and told him he would be captured and personally judged by Nebuchadnezzar for his rebellion.  The good news: He would not be executed but instead die a peaceful death in captivity.  Jeremiah gave Zedekiah this message as the Babylonian army was relentlessly attacking Jerusalem.  All of Jeremiah’s prophecies came true to the letter because they were straight from God, just as every word of unfulfilled prophecy in the Bible will come to pass!
