Reading assignment:   __Proverbs 8 through Proverbs 9

Focal verse(s):  Proverbs 9:8-9:  “Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you.   Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.”

Knowing the consequences of adultery because of his own father’s disastrous affair with Bathsheba, Solomon “camped out” on the subject of adultery with his son, continuing in the 8th chapter to expand on the perils of such an affair.  The last half of the chapter relates how wisdom participated with God in creating the world.  In the 9th chapter, Solomon pictured wisdom to his son as a builder of homes preparing a great feast for all those who do not have wisdom.  This shows the hard work and discipline that is required to obtain true wisdom.  Who is invited to this great feast of wisdom?  The ignorant and those who lacked good sense are invited.  A valuable lesson in the 9th chapter is the comparison of a person who will not listen to advice with a wise man who appreciates the goodness of correction and reproof.  The person who will listen to and heed the advice of one who is a wise Christian will always grow in wisdom.  Seek someone out today whom you respect and know is a growing Christian and “pick their brain” for some wisdom that you can apply to your own life.  Here are a few additional thoughts about wisdom: It doesn’t matter how much money you have; everyone has to buy wisdom on the installment plan.  The wise carry their knowledge as they do their watches, not for display, but for their own use.  H.L. Mencke said, “The older I grow, the more I distrust the familiar doctrine that age brings wisdom.” *
