Reading assignment:  __Psalm 18:30-50     __2 Samuel 9:1-3    __2 Samuel 4:4    __2 Samuel 9:4-13

Focal verse(s):  Psalm 18:46:  “The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of my salvation

In the second half of Psalm 18, David pointed out that “God’s ways are perfect and His word flawless“.  That should be a great answer to the liberal theologians who don’t take God’s word as inerrant and infallible!  He again used the terms “Shield”, “Refuge”, and “Rock” in showing how God can be counted on for protection and salvation.  David described how the Lord prepared him for battle, giving him strength, efficiency, and agility to have victory over his enemies by pursuing, crushing, and ultimately destroying them.  God could make David’s way perfect because of His perfection, and David gave all the credit for his victorious life to the Lord.  David had made a promise to his friend Jonathan (Saul’s son) that he would never forget the covenant of friendship between them. Discovering that there was a son of Jonathan still alive named Mephibosheth who was crippled, he sent one of his servants to bring him to the palace.  He restored Saul’s personal estate to Mephibosheth and gave him a pension for life.  He also allowed him to live and eat at the palace as one of David’s own sons.  What a beautiful picture of salvation: We are “crippled in sin”, yet the King of heaven loves us and allows us to live and eat at His palace (and our crippled condition is hidden under the table of God’s love!)
