Focal verse(s):  Exodus 21:17:  “”He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.”

We see the tremendous importance the Lord places on the sanctity of the family in this section. Parental respect was sacred and the death penalty was to be given to those showing physical violence toward their parents, kidnapping, or even verbally abusing parents. Premeditated murder of any kind was also given the death penalty.  In cases of personal injury to another person, there were various laws, dealing with physical quarrels, slave relationships, and pregnant women.  In most cases the law of retaliation (“an eye for an eye”) was used in order to keep the punishment on an even keel.  The chapter concludes with several laws regarding injuries involving the owner’s animals.  Some of these laws seem very harsh as we look at them from our modern culture.  Yet this society did not have the problems with divorce, teenage suicide, parent-teen conflicts, and crime we have today!  Before the world was created, God knew about the importance of respecting parents and laws.  If we could get back to these Godly principals in our land today, we would see a great reduction in divorce and crime and an increase in family harmony!  How is your family’s “spiritual temperature”?  Do you have a daily family devotional time of prayer, Bible reading, and discussion?  Make a commitment right now to place family devotionals in your daily schedule, then work hard each day to make it happen!
